Kawan Kitchen Mate, a new cooking show that will finally answer the most important question for South Asian-Americans, “What’s for dinner?” started airing recently on Star India Plus TV.
Hosted by local talent Kunal Lamba of New York City, the show takes the host into homes of real families across the US and shows them innovative and tasty ways to rethink dinner options. The beauty of the show’s concept is that families will learn how basic ingredients on their grocery list and in their fridge can be used to make new tasty dishes every week.
Lamba was picked as the host out of hundreds of applicants who learned about the show after an intense online, television, social media and print campaign. A self proclaimed foodie and general manager of NYC’s award-winning Devi restaurant, Lamba will host the 13-episode of the show.
Although Lamba was born to a New Delhi family with roots in the restaurant business and was educated in the Culinary Arts in India, surprisingly, he has never been a chef. Instead, he made a name for himself in restaurant management. Lamba adds, “This is a dream come true for me, and I am finally putting all my talents to use in one project, and I am excited to meet these households and families.”
He also recalls how he was told by his mentor, “Though you have great appreciation for food, you should not spend your life within four white tiled walls of a hotel/restaurant kitchen as you talk a lot.”
The show is the brainchild of Executive Producer Rahul Walia of Touchdown Media and is part reality TV, part educational cooking show, and part entertainment as viewers meet families across the US and learn how to apply Lamba’s culinary solutions to their own dinner tables.
“Our objective is to try and offer new ideas and think out of the box while getting to know our wonderful community,” said, Walia.
“Star Plus is excited to be breaking new barriers with this show which is for the NRI’s, of the NRI’s and by the NRI’s. The audience we cater to is ready for content that is locally generated and involves them on a regular basis. We look forward to seeing Kunal in action on the show,” added Guneet Anand, Head of North America, Star India Plus.
“We are very happy with the selection of Lamba as the host and look forward to an exciting season of the Kawan Kitchen Mate,” said Tim Tan, International Business, Kawan Food
